caterpillers & castles

Hello Everyone!
So let me tell you a little bit about what has been going on lately.
Yesterday, we went to a beach with caves and then we went to the ruins of a castle! It was so incredible to be tossing a frisbee around in front of a giant castle. Most of the castle was made of wood, so there wasn't much left but it was still daunting. It was on the top of a high hill and there was still remanents of a watery ditch around it.
Later that day, my friend sarah was eating fresh, organic salad greens, when suddenly, under them there appeared a caterpiller. a black hairy one that was still alive! if that doesn't demonstrate how fresh our food is, i don't know what does. in true 'middle school' fashion, another friend, Kirk, decided to eat the caterpiller, claiming it was good protein. after that, we all carried on with our meals as if nothing had happened.
There is another group here at findhorn learning about eco-villages. They're called the EVT group (Eco-Village Training) and there are about 30 people from all over the world. Each person in that group cooked a dish for dinner and we had an AMAZING multi-cultural FEAST. There was soooo much delicious food that afterwards i didn't think i would walk.
I decided to stop eating sugar (in addition to the vegan diet) and it has been getting harder and harder. it is scary how much my body craves it constantly. even in the form of white bread. MmMmmMmM. but i am staying strong.
we also watched this documentary/movie (that i've also already seen) called "The End of Suburbia: oil depletion and the collapse of the american dream" It was a brutually honest outlook that explored the American way of life and possible future scenarios as the planet approahces a critical time period when the demand for fossil fuels and natural gas are creating an increasing gap with the supply. it was actually very eye opening and slightly scary and it made me want to become completely self sufficient again.
i HIGHLY recommend watching the movie. it definintely makes you think. i think everyone needs to see it. it's that important of a movie.

Aunt Sue & Aunt Kay- thank you so much for keeping Grandma & Grandpa in the loop! It makes me happy to know that they are staying in the loop. it makes me feel like they are somehow here with me.

Also, we had our first 'creative expressions' class. whenever i try to even think of art, all i can remember is m C+ in middle school. maybe this time will be different, i'll keep you updated Aunt Sue!

And Aunt Kay, i am getting so afraid of the future! food security, should we run out of oil, is NOT secure at all and i think that the future will be dependent on locally grown produce and low-impact architecture. we are ahead of the game! if you do build this cabin i would LOVE to know how you did it! keep me posted!

Bret- i'm happy that you're enjoying this blog. to be honest, i'm not much of a blogger, but i'm trying. classes here so very non-traditional. we sit (or lie!) in a circle on the floor and have tea breaks every hour. i can't wait to leave the 'classroom' to actually visit wind turbines and go on other exciting field trips. you are always welcome to visit!

and now it's a long weekend. a friday night and what am i doing? curling up on the couch with a book and a cup of tea. i feel like such an old lady! thanks for all of the comments, i love and miss you all!

self-sufficientcy is the name of the game. Just wish I could get Uncle Ron to see that. Today I have been looking at backyard wind generators. Must be really expensive as nowhere can I find a price nor will they even email me back with one. hmmm ;-)

page rebecca. the fact that i didn't get a shout out hurts my feelings slightly..what hurts me even more is that you make it appear to the casual reader that you were actually interested in CDAE's favorite doomsday movie. i can only hope that you are just trying to make others believe that you are paying attention to your schoolwork. actual interest in a movie starring some crazy man sitting in a chair narrating over pictures of America's first cookie cutter neighborhood on Long Island is just "crazy pants". joshua farley would be proud. and that is not a compliment.

the most disturbing news, however, is your attempt to not eat sugar. sugar. come on now. go ahead, stop drinking soda. don't eat any more ice cream. but for the sake of the man upstairs, don't give up sugar completely! go buy yourself some organic sugar..i hear they make it in honduras. i mean, page...take a step back and look at your world without me in it. you don't eat cheese. you don't eat sugar. you watch and ?enjoy? the movie that offers no hope.

it sounds sad. are you depressed? do you need help? there are hotlines you can call.
1-800-SAD-YANK.

i have no life either, but i did have cheese pizza for dinner. ice cream for dessert. and the last movie i watched was my new sign o the times prince dvd. it was uplifting, in so many ways.

xoooo

Back from Cabo (are you allowed to tell anyone that your parents indulged themselves in decadence?).
I am glad that you are being exposed to so many different lifestyles, cultures, experiences, etc..., but remember to think critically and decide whether some new idea is feasible verus a utopian dream and remember, too, that not every new idea, good or bad, is one that you have to embrace. Whenever a new venture is contemplated, one must regard it from an economic feasibility viewpoint. Also don't give up on our good old capitalist system to adapt to changes in demand and the price of resources.

Mom and I had a great time in Cabo and have returned to pretty dull weather here in CT--in the 40's and drab, but there was an article in the paper about maple syrup making and the article brought back some happy memories.
The woman "Mo" sounds interesting, as do your classes. The "newness" of it all seems overwhelming--so many new ideas and concepts. Will mom and I recognize you intellectually as being our daughter? Maybe I should send you some articles on conservatism and my old issues of National Review so you stay rooted in the good ole USA and capitalism!!
Your parents and aunts/unlces (on my side) have anohter trip planned, but not until October 2008, so a trip to Scotland seems around the corner for mom and I. Teh house Uncle Greg provided in Cabo was like a minimansion--he joined a club that has houses around North America that are all huge and loaded with amenities.
Peter, right now, is arguing with mom and Nanny about why he should have a cell phone. Mom and I are waiting for Abby to return so we can ask her about a bag full of empty beer cans we found when we got back from Cabo. Aren't you glad to be out of the house and away from all this kid stuff?

Well, I will sign off but will write a letter later this week and mail it and will try to keep up with your blog.
Love DAD. XXXOOO

Its me, DAD, again. I just looked at your two photo albums. I loved the pictures of you standing in front of the door of an underground hut at the nature preserve. The beach looks unspoiled, Cluny Castle looks pretty cool, and when did you learn to wash windows??!! I love the pictures--it helps me to understand better what you are doing and it is great to have a name to associate with a face. Your group looks like they are very nice. Aunt Regis started each moring at Cabo by doing Yoga to the sunrise. And boy, is AUnt Regis limber--at age 56 she can palm the floor without bending her legs!
Keep the photos coming.
Love DAD
